I loved the Great British Bake Off. Tuesdays were the new Friday – a day to look forward to with expectation and anticipation. Silver fox Paul and my life long heroine Mary playing good cop/bad cop in the face of nervous contestants presenting their creations in person or anonymously in the case of the dreaded technical challenge.

The final said challenge when discussed by Paul and Mary did indeed sound tricky. Squares of sponge topped with marzipan, coated in buttercream, piped with a swirl of more buttercream and coated in pink fondant with a chocolate drizzle.

Hard to believe I make these regularly – though not to this recipe if I am honest. I generally use sugarpaste not marzipan and the buttercream swirl is usually underneath the sugar paste. I’ve not coated the sides with buttercream before and it was a challenge to get those corners neat.

The result? Heaven in a cupcake case. Absolutely delicious though I say it myself. More images in the gallery

As for the photo – a nice opportunity to use one of the other cupcake stands I have, and to include some of the fondant and chocolate topped fairy cakes that are regular extended family requests!
